The above is my answer to re-doing my medicine chest. This is in colored pencils on Moleskine. And it is a silly answer. I let my imagination run wild last night when I was tired. But really, what guest wouldn't love to open this lavender medicine chest and find flowers, a lit candle, fish bowl(and food) and Santa figurine?I think Lynn's cat was practicing to get at my goldfish!
Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. I did get a lot more depth and had fun doing it.

This is a rather boring (read empty) medicine chest in the guest bathroom. I laughed when I decided to do it...opened it up and saw two bottles of sun tan lotion. Well, hey, sunburn can be a real problem in Arizona and I want my guests to be protected.
Then there is a candle (!?), matches and bars of soap. Funny, the things we put in a medicine chest.
I painted this in watercolor and found that painting a white cabinet against light tan wallpaper (with the little birdhouses) is a challenge I have not solved yet.
Any suggestions?
But it was fun.

thanks for the look inside your chest. My suggestion would be the same as I gave to Lin recently ... you don't have to paint things the colors they appear in real life. Add value and contrast by painting things any color you like.
What a good idea! I think I'll try touching it up and post the updated version. I get so caught up in doing a realistic sketch that I forget I don't have to.
I knew you would have the right answer Karen. Thanks.
Teri,
I think you've done a nice sketch with pleasing colors. You might add just a touch of shading with a very light gray color to create shadows behind the objects in the cabinet for a little depth. Also, you might try a very light, transparent wash of black over the shadow to the right and underneath the cabinet to tone back the color a bit.
I must say teri you went and done it again. Where do you get all theses insperations. RR
I LIKE THIS!! I love how you've achieved depth within the medicine cabinet!
Well, Teri - I would skip the wallpaper, which distracts from your delightfully empty (but not as empty as mine) medicine chest.
I didn't bother drawing my boring wallpaper, either.
Teri, I really like the soft colours, it's a lovely illustration. Is this the updated one?
The quilts are so cute!
I think its pretty damn good!!! :o)!!!
Is this is updated picture? I think it looks good! I agree that you might want to try a few cast shadows from the bottles inside the cabinet, and Karen has a great suggestion, too!
Oh gosh, I have not updated this yet, ideas are still rolling around in my mind. Maybe I'll do a wild fantasy cabinet.
You know, Teri, I may be the odd duck here, but I like your first sketch better! LOL I like the white and the depth is apparent to me ... I like the lavender too -- but the first one seems to make me smile more! Good job on both!
Thanks everyone and don't worry Lin, you are not an odd duck--we just think alike. So, does that make us both odd ducks?
I like them both, the fantasy version makes me smile!
i like the first one with santa
and i love the wallpaper
don't lose it
just remember that white things are not white once light and shade does it's job
scott says to say hi and sorry he hasn't been by
