Animal Wednesday - Baby Cardinal

I have an old white wicker chair that I put under this tree because it is falling apart and I don't want anyone to sit on it. And it looks kind of neat.
Good thing it was there
because this torn-up nest had a baby cardinal fall out of it.
Here is the father watching out for the baby.

who was sitting on the chair

looking quite forlorn.
When I walked out for the mail I noticed the baby and heard the father sqawking in the tree so I ran for my camera and sketchbook.
I managed to get those photos and this quick sketch and still the baby did not move.
When I looked an hour later I could still hear Father sqawking and flitting around the everygreen trees so I think the baby was under those trees.
I am not sure the baby is even old enough to make it.

When I walked this am, all was quiet so I am hoping for the best.
Interestingly the baby was dark with just a trace of red.

Happy Animal Wednesday everyone!

The poor little thing. I bet its nest mates were a snack for a predator. I hope the little one survives. If the father has anything to do with it it will. Cardinal dads work really hard for their young. Cute sketch. HAW.

What an ridiculous looking little birdie! I love the hairdo, too! I hope he makes it - we lost an entire nest of tree swallows this year - I think a cat took them out...

Great sketch, too - you've captured his pitiful little look perfectly!

Oh, I hope baby will be OK! These birds are always a source of worry for us! Especially babies! What a joy to be born a cardinal! Lucky guy from the get-go! Your sketch is so great...love the hair!!!

We had a cardinal nest right outside of our breakfast nook windows last year and when the babies fledged they looked about like this one does!

There was much squawking and a flurry of feathers with the parents (dad mostlly) hustling the babies to a bank of trees about 20 feet away.

I'm sure your little guy made it and I love, love, love the sketch! Sweet little guy - welcome to the world!

Good thing for you it wasn't a bluejay! They attack anything within sight when one of their babies falls out of the nest. I generally admire the bluejay, unless it's pecking at my eyes.

I always imagined cardinals to be the gentry of the backyard birds.

Looks like you were able to get quite close up to the little bird Teri. I hope the story has a happy ending. Sweet.

Are you going to go see Chris' dyed fabrics in person? How how I envy your proximity to her! Take lots of photos if you do please!!!
color me green!

Aaw- I hope you don't have a cat....Your sketch of the baby bird is really sweet.

No cats around my house but I know there are a few feral floating around the neighborhood.

But I think it was a bluejay because when the bluejay hit the window 2 weeks ago there was also a lot of cardinal activity at the same time. Suspicious!

I have also updated my blog with that 'link withing' widget. I kept seeing it around blogland and finally found out how to do it. If you are interested go to
http://www.linkwithin.com/learn

It is very easy. Now I will be much better at listing my labels. :)

Wonderful post, Teri. Is there ever a baby bird who isn't adorable, in a sort of homely way. They look so darned vulnerable.

The great thing about being an artist and a nature lover, you notice these things that happen in the cycle of events around you. The artist in you captures these happenings with photos and artwork. Most people just don't think about picking up their cameras and brushes. Kudos. Judy

Teri, didn't you long to put the baby back where he belonged? Too bad Daddy Cardinal wouldn't have allowed it. I love the way you journal everything.

This is a lovely post...Well done! :)

Oh no! I hope that poor little baby survives. I love how you captured the event in your journal. It's inspiration. I try to do it, but you succeed every time.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know!
How is the baby bird now?

Update for inquiting minds:

I have not seen hide nor hair of baby, father or mother! But I haven't found any little bodies so I'm hoping for the best.

I ran across your picture & blog, my daughters brought me a baby cardinal last year like this that fell from a nest but couldn't fly at all. The parents wouldn't leave it...I took it in and researched the concoction to feed it. The next day parents went to every room we took the bird into...so I tried to set up a safe caged area outside...parents tried to feed it but couldn't...me being determined...went inside and dismantled my bathroom window...took her in there...for a couple of weeks I had mom & dad coming into my house via the window feeding her...every night I'd put her to bed in a cage and covered her to be able to use our bathroom with screen and curtain down. One day I heard her outside...I went out, she was balancing, tiny as she was, on a bleeding heart branch...she tweeted at me...her parents tweeted at her and she jumped up to fence with them...and off she went...with one on both sides. If your lil one was able to make it uptop the chair and the parents were around...I think there's a great chance she made it :D
