I was weeding the garden and realized a couple of things about my Wisconsin prickly pear cactus:
- they have not bloomed yet or I missed it
- their spines are very small at the top and non-existant on the rest of the pad
- they cannot be weeded for obvious reasons
- they have a symbiotic relationship with the pine needles that fall on and around them thus making weeding unnecessary
- they thrive on neglect
- And they are definitely survivors!
I sketched the way some of the pads lay on the ground, get covered up with pine needles and still develop new pads. They are in a small garden near the front porch facing south where you can see the fencing in the background.
Happy Cactus Monday everyone.
Be sure to leave your link so we can visit you and be sure to stop back later in the day to see who has left a Cactus Monday post.

The Prickly Pear cacti are a continuous joy in our non-desert gardens. Great rendition of the pine straw with the design in the background. The Cactus Monday link is not showing on my view of your blog. Judy
Cactus in Wisconsin, huh? I really like the way you paint in watercolor, Teri!
I'm jumping back into Cactus Monday...but can't find where to leave my link!
HCM...no weeding necessary is the best.

Prickly Pear cactus comes to the rescue again. I always like to see them. This is a good sketch. I can just imagine how they look with pine needles around them. HCM.
P.S. I don't see Mr Linky. He is being shy this morning.
I absolutely love this and the way you interpreted the pine needles. Very painterly and wild!!
Where are my %#*& art supplies????
HCM!!
Mr Linky is acting up! I have sent a help message and hopefully it will be fixed soon.
They really are surviivors! I am amazed at how a little rain brought mine back up straight and tall. I love your drawing- it is just lovely!
Okay, Mr Linky is back from the repair shop. "So sorry for the inconvenience," said Mr Linky. :)
They needed to put me on a new server.
So funny as you said the Mr. Linky not functioning....Teri!
Very lovely cactus drawing. Two tones and I know they are survivors.
Happy Cactus Monday!
You are so lucky to have cacti wherever you are........
Wonderful sketch teri!
Happy cactus Monday!!!!
Great observations! I have a pine tree in my yard and it is nice that where the pine needles fall, weeds don't grow. I like how your sketch shows how the prickly pear can lay down and pop up in a new place.
Pine needles and cacti...what a fun combo...the pattern of your fence makes it look even more Arizonian! HCM from the "scorched earth" part of the planet! LOL :)
Happy Cactus Monday :)
I love your sketch and painting, and your description, so true and inspiring, thriving and neglect and surviving!

I am neglectful this Cactus Monday as my visit with friend was not prickly at all and took front seat!

Yes...same problem here in many places where the pine needles are all in the cactus! Yikes...you gotta love it or leave it!!! LOL!
so can anybody be a cacuteer? I've not joined because I don't have any cacti. But I might be tempted to go out and buy one. HCM seems to be such a fun event every week1
