This is the first page in my journal. Notice how mountains always find their way into my journal? I love spreading them across the whole page because that's how I see them in front of us while driving.
That drive into California was something. Went from sea level to 4000 ft on winding, twisting roads from El Campo into San Diego (I-8 for those that might know this route). Once in San Diego, it was all the California traffic that I have heard stories about. What a nightmare! 6 lanes of cars and trucks going as fast as they can. Yikes! But I did it.
We stayed at the Naval Air Station because DH was a Marine at this base on North Island when the Marines controlled it. Now the Navy is in charge.
Let me just say that this base is 5x4 mile maze, but we finally found our way around.
We all told him he probably would not recognize anything from those days....and he didn't, it was all completely different.
One of the things he wanted to see was the Del Cornado Hotel (in the background) because there were military meetings there at one time. It is a huge beautiful place on the ocean and really the centerpiece of the island.
The concierge was so nice; she opened the Crown room so he could see it and walk through it. He said the ceiling used to be draped in red velvet. This is the building you see in the photo above with the big red roof.
You can see why it is called the crown room.
We had the breakfast buffet on Friday and the bottom half of my sketch (above) was in there. I used the kalanchoe plant on our table with the background looking out the windows to the ocean. I took my sketchbook with me everywhere and tried to squeeze in as many sketches as I could.
We spent three hours walking around there enjoying everything there was to see. I did manage to find some daisies growing on the grounds (bottom right corner of journal page).
It's going to take me a few days to show you everything. Such an interesting town.

Thanks for sharing my favorite place with me!!! Beautiful journal page!!!
Oh yes.. that CA traffic is one of the reason we left SO CAL. Con used to drive that daily for work. He was sick of it.
We visited the Hotel Del Cornado one year..I have photos somewhere. But we never got to see inside that room tho. So this is great. Look forward to more of your trip. Take your time. :))
Oh yes. loved the journal page.
Beautiful hotel! Sounds like a great day!
I can't imagine going from sea level to such a height, but it does sound a lovely trip. Glad you had your sketchbook with you it's so nice to look into someone elses world. Look forward to more.
Fun, I can't wait to see all of your sketches. It is never the same when you go back. SD is a wonderful place.
San Diego is my favorite city! I love Balboa park - I hope you got to visit there too. If I ever live in a city again, it would be San Diego.
Teri - WELCOME BACK! Looking at your first journal page, reading your words - then seeing the first batch of photos - WHAT FUN!
(Sorry about the traffic chaos...it's Californina....though - not quite as bad in Northern California!)
The photo of your DH, strolling through the Crown Room is wonderful.... I know he has many, many memories of the hotel and the base, It is sad that times change - and so do places....but...his memories will always remain fresh in his mind and heart.
I adore the Crown Room! (How nice of the Concierge to let you in!) The hotel is pretty all over too...
Day 1 looked fantastic!
Did you get sunbburned?
Love,
♥ Robin ♥
What an exciting trip! And really nice that you recorded your memories in a sketchbook. I would love to make it out to the west one day. You all make it look so inviting. I've never even seen a "real" mountain. All of ours are covered in trees.
I love San Diego and that hotel is really something isn't it? glad you had a good time
