My Dove Family

Mrs Dove had a nest in the tree right next to our driveway and one day a baby flew out and landed on a barrel so I ran out and took a (zoomed in) photo.

The baby barely had her eyes open.

Then she found Mama and followed her around and got fed a few times.

When Mama wasn't around, the baby hid in the bushes until she came back.

Then Papa joined the family and helped shepherd the baby around and fed her also.

The baby grew so fast that a week later I can't recognize which one is the baby
AND
Mama is back on her nest getting ready for another family.

We were watching again:
He brought her a stick and she rearranged it on the nest.

She is very patiently sitting on her egg(s) as the process starts all over again.

Isn't nature grand?!

Happy Animal Wednesday everyone.

How cool to see the whole dove family! Only seen that with quail and some other birds. Given all the mourning doves and white-wing doves here, I'll be on the look-out for the babies!

I love these birds. I love hearing their mournful hoot. We used to have lots around here but they have thinned down for some reason. Well probably because of the big Hawks that frequent our yard now. Enjoy watching. Are they easy to see or do you need binoculars?

No binoculars Cris, picture them right next to our driveway and with the weather being so nice we are out there a lot. Between the doves and the hummingbirds, ther is always something to see.

EXSQUISITE PHOTOS!! Thank you for sharing these.... (being the *wuss* that I am, I cried becaue they are so lovely..)

Like Cris, we used to have a lot of Mouring Doves.... but lately, not so many....and I fear Cris is right - we (even in SF) now have a large and growing population of Hawks....

I adore the gentle voice of the Doves.....and love their "hopping* movements when they are about to mate! It always made me laugh....

HAW!

Love,

♥ Robin ♥

Teri,
These photos are priceless.
I observed a family of mourning doves last summer, and noticed the parent's devotion. They truly seem like such good parents, and work as a teaam. And soon the fledgling did seem to be unrecognizable from the adults!
Just yesterday, on a walk, I heard the lovely, haunting cooing of mourning doves right back in the same location. I wonder if it could possibly be the same pair, as my understanding is that many birds do return to the same location every year.
Are your doves mourning doves?
They certainly are pretty.
What a treat to have them in such close proximity to you.
