I did a lot of the driving today so only had time to do two sketches.
After leaving those beautiful mountains the scenery consisted of flat, flat and flat with only a distant tree line to break the monotony.
This is my conceptual painting of the feed lots we see in eastern New Mexico and part of Texas. You know they are coming because the smell greets you 5-10 miles before you get there. There are hundreds and hundreds of cattle fenced in where all they can do is eat, poop and mill around. Very sad.
After I drove through Oklahoma City at 5:30pm, DH had to pry my fingers off the steering wheel.
Oh, and these sketches were done on my Arches paper sketchbook...ah, so much nicer.
Tomorrow we will tackle Kansas; Wichata, Topeka and Kansas City. I remember that Kansas City is very poorly signed so that will be fun. Yeah, right!

Lovely sketches again, Teri. I like how you captured what you saw driving along. Travel safe! :)
Wow...just east of me. But an eternity in all that wide open, unpopulated flatness! But I like it in a way, and wespecially with your sketches. This is one time I am glad the internet does not transmit smells!
Too bad for the poor cows. Almost there. Hang tight!!!
Lovely Sketches Teri!
all that driving :(
But eh day 2 is done so..... you are getting closer to your goal.
Safe travels♥
I couldn't eat beef for several days after seeing some of these feed lots. It is sad. Love your travel sketches. It is nice to be able to use this type of paper. It will be a shock to your system when you get home to some colder weather. I know you look forward to it though.
Teri,
Yes, now day 2 is behind you!
Hoping you have wonderful restorative sleeps at night, before the next day of driving!
Awesome that you still found the time to sketch, I know alot about flat landscapes!! Although I'm thinking that the land is ranch land, like Alberta here in Canada. In Saskatchewan it is pretty well mostly farm land , and miles and miles of grain, which can be very pretty in the harvest season. The other big feature of the landscape is sky! You have to have been born here, to think it beautiful, methinks though! :)
Sorry about those poor cows!
Wishing you another interesting day for sketching, if possible.
Hugs,
Brenda
Can't bear to think about those cattle....(one of the reasons I have given up eating meat..)
The flatlands are so ...well..flat...it would make me nervous to live where there are no mountains....but as Brenda says, if you live there and see it in all the seasons, there is beauty to be found.
I hope you are nearly home!!!!!
Big Hugs,
♥ Robin ♥
I'm surprised you can find the time to paint at all if you are doing so much driving. I know the scenery out there can be pretty boring.
I'm glad (for the cows) that I rarely eat beef.
I agree with katie Jane, I dont think I could hold a pen or pencil after prying my fingers off the steering wheel that long. but you did a great job. I too gave up beef some time ago but dont think chickens have it much better. Stay safe..
Thanks for stopping by everyone.
I guess I just have to paint while traveling this far. Helps my sanity.
Benday, I think skies are beautiful and your flat lands sound beautiful also.
I sometimes just how close I am to my Interent friends when we travel cross country.
