Re-Purpose Greeting Cards - Mini-tutorial

I had a brainstorm the other day and thought I would share it with you.
As I was looking and sorting through the greeting cards we received I thought some of them were just too nice to throw away.  So I decided to make small sketchbooks out of them.

Mini-tutorial

Cut your paper to size.  This card measured 7-1/4" by 4-3/4" so I cut my paper 7x9".  The width is twice the card so it can be folded over and sewn in the middle.  This fits in the card nicely.
I have 6 pages to a signature which gives me 12 sketching pages.

I used the pamphlet stitch as shown here.

The pamphlet stitch is the easiest to do.

You can use any size card you want.

Here is the finished sketchbook.
I found some duct tape with these splashes of paint on it.  Perfect for the outside.  I taped some over the fold to cover the stitches and along each edge.

Ready to throw in my purse so it is always available for that sketching opportunity.

What a COOL idea. I like re-purposing things and cards are to pretty to toss but one can get to many to keep in a drawer. Great idea.

Teri! This is a wonderful way to create a supply of sketch books and preserve beautiful greeting cards!!

And I am thinking that some hand made cards that may not stand up to the "rigors of field sketching" would make sweet little keepsake books for capturing special quotations or thoughts or verses.

Or Christmas card lists or gift lists!

Thank you for sharing the how to - I am sharing this on the blog AND I can not wait to make my first one!

Teri,
This is a great idea! I think it would be fun to make some for children to use at the daycare, or also to teach the older children to make themselves. The stitch looks simple but to the purpose.
Isn't it interesting that we can get duct tape in so many creative colours now, and the one you choose works perfectly with this card.
I too, keep cards, possibly to cut up for children's art, but plan now to make some of thes books!
Great idea!
